How do I get my family to communicate without fighting?

On my daughters 2nd birthday my mother brought her dog over and didn't tell me she was bringing the dog. She and my aunt said they were coming over early so I could pick up my cake. They came to my house late, dropped her dog off at my house and left to go and get a last minute gift without telling me when they would be back. I called her out on it and my mom huffed, puffed and left.
