What are the mounds of sand in the Brazilian Iemanja festival?

I remember seeing mounds of sand on the beach in Southern Brazil during the Festa de Iemanja. They look as if someone has been buried! I have been trying to find out more about them, and the details of the ceremony itself, but can't see mention of them in any of the articles I've been looking at. Can anyone help?
