Are liberal arts degrees really not that great to get?

I went into college not knowing what i wanted to do. My counselor suggested i major in a liberal arts field like Englsih, History, Anthropology etc because rather than train you for a specific job like civil engineering or nursing you will be prepared to seek just about any job when you graduated with a Liberal arts degree. The world is yours they told me. After doing some research it seems that statistically speaking Liberal arts grads have the highest unemployment and lowest salary when compared to Engineering and the math heavy majors like chemistry and Biology.
